Do you remember the second Terminator movie? Remember when the terminator is driving at night and it
showed an 'enhanced' view from the terminator's view point? That technology is on its way via GM.

GM introduced the heads-up display in 1988. Now they are taking the idea of a heads-up display to the whole front windshield.

The idea isn't to distract the driver -- but provide extensive safety information.

The new system that is still under development creates what they call an "augmented reality version of what is going on outside." Sensors and cameras feed data that help create the image the driver sees on inside of the windshield.

The system could help a driver during an extremely foggy night or a drive through very dense rain or snow. The system can help keep track of the edges of the road and vehicles coming toward the vehicle in the other lane.
Pedestrians, animals and anything else around the vehicle can be visually enhanced on the screen. There's even night vision technology available.

This kind of system won't be put into cars probably until later in the decade, but parts of it might be showing up soon.
GM officials say that testing shows a driver's performance is better relative to head-down systems commonly used in vehicles today.

As part of Chevrolet's activities for the 2010 New York Auto Show, media members and electric vehicle enthusiasts had the opportunity to drive the Chevrolet Volt in EV and extended-range mode.  Here in this video, you can listen to some of thier comments.

And in this video, you can see just how far the Chevrolet Volt can take you in EV and extended-range mode with help from Google Earth.
